New Scholarship Honors Alan H. Walker’s Legacy by Supporting Future Caregivers

Sayre, PA – The Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers (CFTT) is proud to announce the establishment of the Alan H. Walker and Deborah A. Walker Scholarship, a tribute to the extraordinary relationship Alan shared with his caregivers and a commitment to supporting the next generation of compassionate medical professionals.

This scholarship aims to assist students who have demonstrated resilience, hard work, and an unwavering dedication to caring for others. It is designed for individuals who exemplify empathy, compassion, and determination in their pursuit of a career in the medical field. By providing financial support to those advancing their nursing education, this scholarship not only fosters professional growth but also honors the tireless efforts of nurses who made a profound impact on Alan’s life.

“Alan and Deborah firmly believed that the caregivers who dedicate their lives to this profession are extraordinary individuals,” said a representative from CFTT. “It is their honor to assist future nurses who share the same passion and commitment to patient care.”

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a current Nurse Aide, LPN, RN, or APRN at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital (Sayre, PA Campus) with at least one year of employment at Guthrie RPH.
  • Must be accepted into an accredited college, university, or technical school pursuing an advanced degree (LPN, BSN, MSN, DNP, or PhD) or specialized certifications.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.
  • Must submit a 250-500 word essay on the meaning of compassionate care and how they incorporate it into their current practice.
  • Must provide a letter of recommendation from a supervisor, professor, or professional mentor attesting to their character, nursing abilities, and career potential.

All applications must be submitted via email (Word or PDF format) to jallenelford@twintierscf.org no later than Monday, March 31, 2025, by 5:00 PM. Alternatively, applications can be mailed to Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers, 104 W. Lockhart St, Sayre, PA 18840, postmarked no later than March 31, 2025, for consideration in the Fall 2025 semester.

For those wishing to honor Alan H. Walker’s memory with a gift, contributions can be sent to the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers at 401 W. Lockhart Street, Sayre, PA 18840. Please make checks payable to the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers and include “Alan H. Walker and Deborah A. Walker Scholarship” in the memo line.

About the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers

The Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers serves Bradford, Potter, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties in Pennsylvania and Tioga County, NY. It is a purely public charity, incorporated as a non-profit, that has been granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS.

The Community Foundation establishes permanent endowment funds from contributions of many individual citizens, corporations, other foundations, other charitable organizations, and government agencies for philanthropic purposes. As the endowment funds grow, the earnings from these funds are used to make grants to meet identified community needs or fulfill the desire of the donor. Donors can even make recommendations to the Community Foundation of charitable organizations to receive grants.

The Foundation is committed to building philanthropic resources that will sustain healthy and vital communities now and into the future. The Foundation currently manages over 160 funds valued at $14.5 million dollars and has awarded over $2.3 million in grants and scholarships since inception, positively impacting hundreds of lives in the region.
