Penn York Jewish Community Contributes $30,000 to Community Foundation of the Twin Tiers and Honors Harvey and Linda Chernosky for 40+ Years of Service

Sayre, PA – The Penn-York Jewish Community (PYJC), serving the Twin Tiers since 1981, marks over four decades of Jewish connection, tradition, and leadership. Formed by the unification of four local Jewish organizations – the Congregation Beth Israel in Waverly, NY, the Towanda Jewish Community Center, the B’nai B’rith Jewish Women’s Club, and the Sayre Lodge of B’nai B’rith, PYJC continues to foster Jewish identity through cultural, educational, social, and religious activities in Waverly, Sayre, Athens, Towanda, and surrounding areas.

A highlight of this year is PYJC’s $30,000 contribution to the Penn York Jewish Community Fund administered by the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers (CFTT), reinforcing its commitment to long-term sustainability and regional support. The Penn York Jewish Community established this fund in 2011. Contributions to the fund are used to promote and create civic, educational, social, and religious activities among its members. PYJC is proud to collaborate with CFTT and actively participates in programs at Congregation Kol Ami in Elmira, NY.

The Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers (CFTT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that strengthens local communities through grantmaking, philanthropic services, and leadership. It manages permanent endowment funds contributed by individuals, businesses, and organizations, using investment earnings to support community needs and donor goals. CFTT offers donor-advised funds, scholarships, and field-of-interest funds, enabling targeted giving. By bringing stakeholders together and funding initiatives in areas like education, health, housing, and economic development, CFTT fosters lasting regional impact.

This moment also honors Harvey and Linda Chernosky, who have dedicated over 40 years to PYJC. Harvey served as Treasurer, while Linda offered tireless support in multiple roles. “Harvey and Linda have been the backbone of our community,” said Beth Herbst, incoming PYJC Treasurer. “Their care and leadership have kept this organization strong.”
